Sunday Night Spells (2023)
Working with the film, I have thought a lot about the connections between play, ritual, art and queerness. Children's games, religious rituals and artistic practices all offer space to understand oneself and the world and to create meaning - individually or in community with others. At the same time, they can be ways to explore what could be possible and to fantasize about it together. In the book Cruising Utopia (2009) the queer theorist and cultural critic José Esteban Muñoz speaks about queerness as a utopia - a horizon to look towards rather than something already achieved. Queerness is essentially about the rejection of a here and now and an insistence on potentiality or concrete possibility for another world. The queerness is not here but can glimmer in the reflection of an experience, a desire or a dream. If we share our dreams, we can get closer to them.

The film was made on behalf of Gotland's art museum and in collaboration with a group for trans youth at the Fenix youth culture center in Visby.
